Barbecuing in the wind: when to change your plans
Wind changes how a barbecue behaves and can carry sparks beyond the cooking area. Check the weather and the site before lighting. Sometimes the sensible preparation is to postpone the barbecue.
Assess the site before lighting
Look for gusts, dry vegetation, loose materials and nearby combustible objects. Check applicable local restrictions and the grill manual. A sheltered-looking corner is not automatically suitable: it may be too close to a wall, roof or stored items. Do not choose an enclosed place as protection from the wind.
Keep the setup stable
Use a level, firm surface and make sure the appliance cannot wobble. Secure loose objects before starting, without attaching improvised combustible screens to the grill. Keep paths clear for people to step away. Strong or unpredictable wind can make the site unsuitable even if the barbecue itself remains upright.
Do not compensate with more firelighter
Wind-related ignition problems are not a reason to increase the labelled dose or add lighting liquid. Follow vent and lid instructions for the appliance. Do not move a burning grill into a garage, tent or room. If conditions deteriorate, stop according to the manual and watch the fuel until the hazard has passed.
Know when to postpone
Cancel or postpone if you cannot keep the appliance stable, maintain the required clearances or control the risk of sparks. A short delay is preferable to experimenting with screens or makeshift enclosures. After cooking, remember that wind can disturb ash and hidden embers; allow full cooling before disposal and keep supervision in place.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one safe wind-speed limit?
This guide does not set a universal number. Appliance instructions, gusts, surroundings and local restrictions must all be considered; stop if the setup cannot be used safely.
