Choosing and storing

How much firelighter should you use? Read the right dose

The pack size tells you how much you are buying, not how much to use for one fire. Find the dose and method on the current label and check that they fit the instructions for your barbecue.

Find the application instructions

Identify the exact product, its intended use and the quantity stated for that use. Check whether instructions refer to cubes, pieces or another measure. Read placement and lighting directions together with the dose. If the label is missing or unclear, ask the supplier for the correct instructions before using the product.

Do not turn pack size into a formula

A 40-cube pack is not a promise of 40 fires. The 80-, 180-, 200- and 2400-cube formats also describe stock only. Different appliance instructions or lighting conditions may lead to different permitted methods. Avoid calculations based on the number printed prominently on the front without reading the full label.

Prepare the fuel before dosing

Use dry, suitable fuel and the layout required for your barbecue. Keep air gaps open and avoid burying the firelighter in dust or fine fragments. The instructed amount belongs in a properly prepared cold fuel bed. Increasing it is not a substitute for clearing vents, correcting fuel storage or repairing an appliance.

Plan replenishment from real use

After several normal uses, note how quickly a pack is used up while following its label. Use this record to choose the next pack size. Keep enough stock for planned sessions without buying more than you can store appropriately. Never test a new dose by adding cubes to an already burning or warm fuel bed.

Frequently asked questions

Can you give one number for every grill?

No. A universal number would ignore the product label and the appliance. Use the current instructions for the particular combination.
