Lighting a fireplace: preparation, first flame and checks
A good start in a wood-burning fireplace depends on the appliance, fuel and installation. Use this preparation sequence with the manual for your particular model. It cannot confirm that a chimney or appliance is safe to operate.
Start with the manual and condition
Confirm the permitted fuel, load, lighting method and air-control positions. Use the fireplace only when the required inspection and maintenance arrangements are in place and there are no known defects. Clear combustible items from the required space around it. Do not attempt to fix draught problems by choosing a larger firelighter dose.
Prepare suitable wood and firelighters
Choose dry, untreated firewood of the type and dimensions required by the appliance. If checking moisture, use the meter as instructed, including the correct measuring surface. Use firelighters only if both their label and the fireplace manual permit them. Keep the original pack nearby for reference, but outside the required heat clearances.
Arrange the load before lighting
Build a stable load with the specified air spaces. Do not press wood against the glass, obstruct required openings or exceed the recommended load. Put the firelighter where the instructions show. Use a top-down method only when allowed for your appliance. Set the start-up air controls as directed; do not guess from lever direction.
Observe and respond to warning signs
Light the prepared load and follow the door and air-control sequence in the manual. Remain nearby during start-up. Never add firelighter to flames or embers. If smoke enters the room, stop using the appliance and arrange a chimney or service inspection before another attempt. If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, leave the building and call 112. Carbon monoxide cannot be detected by smell.
Frequently asked questions
Can the same firelighter be used in every fireplace?
No. Both the current label and the particular appliance instructions must permit it. Confirm unclear combinations with the appliance manufacturer before use.
