Using a chimney starter: preparation, lighting and handling

A chimney starter concentrates heat around the fuel. It also becomes very hot, so the surface, filling level and safe handling matter as much as lighting itself. Start with the instructions for the exact model.

Inspect and position it

Check the handle, heat shield and body before use. Place the starter only on the heat-resistant surface specified by its manufacturer, often the grill’s charcoal grate. Do not stand it on grass, plastic, timber or a decorative surface that may be damaged. Use it outdoors and keep the surrounding area clear.

Fill according to the manual

Use a compatible fuel and stay within the permitted filling level. Put the approved firelighter in the instructed position and use only the labelled amount. Do not combine lighting products or add flammable liquids. A chimney does not make damp fuel suitable, and overfilling can make both ignition and pouring harder to control.

Watch the fuel develop

Once lit, remain nearby and keep hands, face and loose clothing away from the rising heat. Use the manufacturer’s readiness criteria, not a fixed number of minutes. The upper fuel surface may not tell the whole story. Before moving the starter, plan where the fuel will go and clear the route and destination.

Pour and put it down safely

Use the specified protective equipment and handling method. Pour slowly into the intended area of the grill without leaning over the hot fuel. Put the empty starter on a suitable non-combustible surface where nobody can touch or trip over it. It stays hot after emptying. Let it cool fully before storing; do not improvise water cooling unless the instructions allow it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any firelighter beneath it?

No. Check compatibility in both the starter manual and the firelighter label. The starter’s design does not override product instructions.
