When is the BBQ ready for food? Check fuel and grate

A visible flame does not mean the barbecue is ready to cook. Separate three checks: the firelighter has finished burning, the fuel is ready, and the grate has reached the heat required for your food.

Let the firelighter finish

Follow the product label and wait until the firelighter has burned out completely before cooking. Do not place food over burning firelighter or use smell alone as your test. Never add another cube or lighting liquid once food, flames or embers are present. Prepare the cold grill correctly before starting.

Assess the fuel bed

Use the fuel and grill instructions to judge readiness. An ash coating can be one sign, but colour alone is not a universal rule. Look for a developed, stable fuel bed appropriate to your method. Unevenly lit fuel can produce very different temperatures across the grate, especially when different piece sizes are mixed.

Prepare the cooking zone

Arrange direct and indirect zones only as your barbecue instructions allow. Let the grate heat appropriately and use the thermometer or measuring method recommended for the cooking task. Do not test readiness by holding your hand over the heat. The desired grill temperature depends on the food and method, not on the firelighter brand.

Keep cooking safety separate

A ready grill does not prove that food is cooked through. Use suitable food-temperature guidance and a food thermometer where needed. Keep raw and cooked food and utensils separate. Continue to watch the grill, avoid uncontrolled flare-ups and keep children away from hot surfaces. Leave enough time after cooking for safe extinguishing and cooling.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fixed waiting time enough?

No. Weather, fuel quantity, ventilation and the grill all affect readiness. Use the actual condition of the fuel and the required cooking temperature.
