BBQ
Why does a BBQ go out? Check fuel, air and layout
If a charcoal barbecue fades after ignition, more firelighter is not the first answer. Work back through the preparation once everything is safely cold: fuel condition, ventilation and how the fuel was arranged.
Do not rescue a hot fuel bed
Do not add firelighter cubes or pour lighting liquids onto embers or flames. Keep observing the grill and follow its instructions for stopping and cooling. A nearly invisible ember is still an ignition source. Do not handle or rearrange the fuel by hand just because the visible flame has disappeared.
Check fuel dryness and size
On a cold grill, inspect the charcoal or briquettes and their storage conditions. Damp fuel can make lighting difficult. Fine fragments and dust may fill air gaps, while an unstable arrangement can collapse onto the firelighter. Use suitable fuel and the arrangement recommended by the grill manufacturer rather than adding an arbitrary larger quantity.
Inspect the air path
Old ash can obstruct lower vents. Remove it only when fully cold and according to the manual. Check the actual positions of the controls: an open-looking lever does not always mean maximum airflow. Follow the model’s lid instructions during lighting. Do not improvise a fan or move a burning grill to create more draught.
Change one thing at the next attempt
Once the cause has been addressed and the grill is fully cold, prepare again using the permitted firelighter dose. Record what you changed: dry fuel, cleared vents or a different approved layout. If the problem repeats, check the appliance and fuel instructions or contact the manufacturer before experimenting further.
Frequently asked questions
Will extra cubes solve the problem?
Not necessarily. Extra firelighter cannot reliably correct damp fuel or blocked airflow. Do not exceed the label instructions or add cubes to a hot grill.
